—Emilia on Sufferer & Witness

Sufferer & Witness (サファーー・&・ウィットナス Safaā & Wittonasu?), referred to as S&W (S・&・W(エス・&・ウ) Esu・&・U?) for short, is the Stand of Emilia Vartiainen. It is featured in Standpunk Underground.

According to Dante Inferiro Orlandrius and Judas Priest, it has the greatest chance of becoming a Wound.

Appearance/PersonalityEdit

Sufferer & Witness' appearance is generally consistent throughout the series, though it undergoes small changes as the story goes on, potentially to correspond with Emilia's own character development and the two's relationship. Initially, Sufferer & Witness appears as a colossal stand, easily towering over both its Stand Master and Daft Punk. It appears to have no lower body initially, emerging from an "empty space" near the small of Emilia's back and rapidly expanding in size from that point on. Its height is so great that it has to bend its body in order to fit within the confines of the building the two are fighting in. After its initial defeat, however, the Stand seems to become smaller, and indeed its size decreases throughout the series, with it eventually becoming only slightly taller than Emilia, in a size around the same as Daft Punk. The point of origin for this Stand also seems to change: while it emerges from the same "empty space" every time, Sufferer & Witness' legs become visible, and it stands on its own feet, behind and slightly to the side of its Master.

It's appearance largely consists of a rather thin, gaunt figure wrapped all over in bandages, though it seems to 'fill out' over the course of the series' events. What doesn't change, however, is the various holes and empty spaces located all around its body, which are largely covered up in bandages. It has burning red eyes that strike all those who see them as quite dangerous, and indeed they appear almost feral. Sufferer & Witness is covered all over in various stitches and large nails, which are often sticking directly into its body. In terms of gender, it is neutral, possessing no defining characteristics either which way. This Stand also posses incredibly sharp teeth, the kind that are found more often in animals than in humans. As the duo progress, however, this aspect of its appearance changes as well. Aside from its great reduction in height, Sufferer & Witness' bandages appear to loosen, revealing more of the dead and blackened flesh within (though even this appears to be healing on some level, simply retaining a grey color). The most notable part of this change appears to be the revelation of a crest located on its head, which consists of a white triangle, with a smaller red variant inside, though of opposite orientation. Lying in the middle of this sub-triangle is a single, basic line. Its eyes also become quite clearer and lighter in color, their feralness being replaced with a fiercely-burning fighting spirit. In addition, tears seem to appear along the corners of its eyes on occasion, seemingly at random.

Though not sentient in the traditional sense, Sufferer & Witness has shown signs of greater intelligence, emotions, and even hobbies separate from that of its Master. It appears to be genuinely happy when absorbing the pain of other creatures and even itself, though it will often bow its head noticeably should it be effected by what it has absorbed. It also often looks away from the current situation if manifested when not necessarily needed, and will on occasion watch certain things and pick up objects that appear to interest it. Going by these instances, Sufferer & Witness is a fan of gory horror movies, romantic comedies, as well as seinen or horror manga, to say nothing of the occasional magazine. Either way, it will immediately snap back to attention should Emilia require the use of its services. Sufferer & Witness appears capable of sensing and understanding its Master's emotions to some extent, once in awhile offering a hand to the shoulder.

While its views on its companions are not explored, it appears to hold a sort of begrudging view of Seiji Kamijou and his own Stand, and regards the others in a neutral light (with the occasional exception and outburst of anger or apparent happiness).

HistoryEdit

AbilitiesEdit

Superhuman Strength- S&W has demonstrated an incredible amount of strength, so much so that in its first appearance it managed to keep up with and even surpass the blows delivered by Daft Punk. This strength has only grown as it has evolved, despite its apparent decreasing in overall mass and its much thinner phyisque. As of its final stage, Sufferer & Witness has displayed the strength and force of power that is possessed by most close-range Stands. Its strength easily surpasses that of an ordinary human being, capable of knocking out one within a single blow. In fact, this Stand appears to be unique among its ilk, as rather than defeating its opponents with a final devastating rush attack, it instead lands a single, powerful blow that ranges from an uppercut to a blow to the gut, knocking them out almost instantly and dealing a good deal of damage. It often appears to aim at sending its opponents flying up through the air, so that they also accumulate fall damage, or to send them over a long distance where they will crash through various things in their way. However, it at times will simply deliver a single blow and then dissapate, allowing the opponent to collapse in the meantime. S&W has also shown the capacity to easily block strikes from physical combat-oriented Stands.

Superhuman Speed- In addition to its incredible amount of strength, Sufferer & Witness has an extreme amount of speed. Along with its strength, this can be boosted through its base 'pain absorption' ability. Unlike strength, however, its speed appears to have grown as it has evolved. While it was no slowpoke during its first appearances and battles, it was well below the level of strength, and being able to dodge its blows was easier in that state than it ever would be. As it continued to grow, however, this speed has finally reached its zenith, and it now matches or is only slightly below this strength. Often used in combination with the aforementioned strength, S&W uses these to easily block and launch attacks, becoming more capable of a rapid-fire series of punches, kicks, and other such attacks. This also appears to be reflected in how it manifests, appearing instantly rather than emerging in the conventional sense. That is, rather than fading in at a relatively slow rate, it appears instantly when Emilia calls upon it, and attack vigorously. However, speed is still not necessarily this Stand's focus, and Sufferer & Witness is far from the fastest, and even its 'D' ranking only moves up to a 'C', meaning that many other Stands can easily outpace it in this area. Thus, speed is not considered one of S&W's major points, and is rarely used as the lead advantage in a battle (unless the speed of the opponent is significantly lower than its own).

Suffering Absorption and Empowerment- Sufferer & Witness' main strength lies in the ability to absorb the pain and suffering of others around it, in the form of red dust or red energy, and then absorbing it into its own body, the material slipping between the cracks in its bandages. The pain S&W takes in can vary wildly and seems to encompass the whole spectrum of what can be defined as "pain", from emotional to physical injuries and everything in between. This applies to anyone on the battlefield around the Stand, and often they are unaware of it save for a single major effect: the slow vanishment of pain from their body. No matter what ailment they are suffering from, the actual "pain" that they derive from it will slowly diminish and then vanish entirely while Sufferer & Witness is active. While deeper wounds will begin to cause pain again after enough time has passed following the Stand's disappearence, minor wounds will vanish completely. As S&W continues to develop and increase its power, as well as open up along with its master, the minor wounds that it absorbs pain from will begin to heal, while larger wound will cease bleeding. Emotional injuries will not undergo the same effect, though minor ones will vanish entirely and larger specimens will be removed from the target's mind briefly. As it continues to develop, Sufferer & Witness even gains the ability to absorb its own pain while in combat, and the larger the gaps in its bandages grow, the more pain it has shown the capacity to absorb.

When the pain is absorbed, the Stand can then turn it into raw energy to attack. The energy still appears red, coursing through its veins and between its bandages as it strikes, and can also be used to form basic constructs and fire off blasts with devestating power. Its strength is directly proprotional to the amount of strength absorbed; while on its own it has the basic strength of any close-ranged Stand, S&W can empower itself far beyond that level with the pain of others and even itself. There does appear to be a limit, however, and if overindulged it will expell a large amount of pain from its body at once, taking the form of red steam in various shades, in a manner not dissimilar to how a car releases smoke when it overheats. Thus, the term "overheating" is often used to describe Sufferer & Witness in this state, and much like any other device, it at times needs periods of recovery after reaching this point before it can be used again.

An interesting phenomenon that sometimes occurs when absorbing pain of the emotional variety is brief "flashes", ones that offer Emilia glimpses into the person's pain, adding a personal perspective to their confrontation.

Superhuman Accuracy-

Limited Bandage Manipulation- As it has continued to evolve, Sufferer & Witness has shown the unique capacity of releasing and controlling the bandages that are constantly wrapped around its form. This is no total control, however; the bandages released can only move along set paths and perform set actions decided by Emilia (and potentially the Stand itself) before they are actually fired off. When doing so, they possess very little destructive power on their own, but can do damage by wrapping themselves around targets and flinging them through or into things in order to cause damage. Despite having very little attack power, they can still pierce material such as metal and concrete in order to reach a destination if needed. Furthermore, in order to provide extra strength or actually deal damage in a strike, these bandages can be charged with the absorbed 'pain energy', giving them a red tint. The amount of shapes and formations that Emilia can create out of this varies wildly, from simple strikes or nets to complex webs that can entrap opponents. These bandages also appear quite thin, being capable of sliding between keys on a computer and discharging energy directly into it, causing destruction from within. These bandages appear to have the same level of durability that S&W has itself, and are indeed finite, as they are sent out and used from its base form, always needing to be connected to Sufferer & Witness. They can also be used when the Stand is not fully manifested, Emilia occasionally using them for impromptu transportation.
